Het gaat niet slecht, zegt Frank van Slobbe van de afdeling Milieu- en Natuurbeheer op Bonaire. Maar het kan altijd beter.

Op gebied van afval doet Bonaire het niet slecht, zeker in vergelijking met de andere landen in het Caribisch gebied. “Het afval wordt goed ingezameld, maar de verwerking ervan kan beter.”

Volgens Van Slobbe moet worden gekeken naar bijvoorbeeld de import van producten die minder schadelijk zijn, maar ook naar de voorlichting aan de consument en een beter recyclingsysteem.

De praktijk
Hoe dat er in de praktijk eruit ziet, kan Van Slobbe nog niet zeggen. Maar het is niet ondenkbaar dat mensen hun afval kunnen inleveren bij de supermarkt, waar alles wordt gescheiden. Of mensen ook thuis hun afval op korte termijn moeten gaan scheiden, weet Van Slobbe niet zeker. “Daarover zijn we aan het discussiëren.”

Als Bonaire vanaf oktober een bijzondere gemeente wordt van Nederland zullen de regels op het eiland niet zozeer worden aangescherpt, maar ze zullen beter worden uitgevoerd en gehandhaafd hoopt Van Slobbe. “Daar zien we wel kansen voor.”

De gemeente Breda en Bonaire werken al een tijdje samen op het gebied van natuur en milieu in de vorm van twinning.

Well, a percentage of these fish is gone due to habitat loss. Hurricanes in the region sometimes cause heavy wave-action on our West coast with devastating results. Coastal development, pollution of our coastal waters and stress through water sport activities is also a major pressure on the health of the reefs.

However, quite a lot of these fish actually end up in the stomachs of those who visit the restaurants on Bonaire. And these visitors are usually tourists. The tiger grouper you might have admired while diving in the morning could very well be the same one you are drooling over on your plate at night.

If the tourists themselves do not make the connection with declining grouper sightings during their dive or snorkel trip, then maybe the restaurants should start looking after their long term interests. For every grouper (or octopus, lobster for that matter) that is taken of the reef to be served in a restaurant will have a negative effect on the number of tourists visiting their restaurant in the future. No fish on our reefs means no tourists on Bonaire. No tourists on Bonaire means no business for restaurants.

I’d like to call on every restaurant on Bonaire to stop serving reef fish, for the sake of our reefs and thus for their own sake.

Take reef fish off the menu of restaurants or take tourists of the menu of our economy.

Harbour Village heeft de saliña in erfpacht gekregen en
is begonnen met de bouw van appartementencomplex. De appartementen zullen aan de rand van de saliña worden gebouwd. De saliña zal constant onder water gehouden worden door zeewater naar binnen te pompen.

De werkzaamheden hebben al belangrijke gedeelten van de
saliña vernietigd. Ook zal bebouwing van de saliña ten koste gaan van planten- en diersoorten die je nergens anders buiten een saliña vindt. En als de saliña permanent onder water wordt gezet door er zeewater in te pompen, zal bovendien het hele ecosysteem veranderen.

Een saliña is een wetland en is van groot belang als buffer tussen land en zee. Na zware regenval zinkt al het vuil en fijnstof in het water naar de bodem van de saliña. Deze saliña voorkomt dus dat de fijnstof de koraalriffen aantast. Ook fungeert een saliña als opvang voor zeewater als het hoogwater is, bij springvloed.

De Aliansa vindt dat voordat er verder iets gebouwd wordt op de saliña, er eerst onderzoek moet gedaan naar de effecten op gezondheid, infrastructuur en het milieu. Zo voorkom je dat Bonaire talloze kostbare problemen krijgt die uit eindelijke voor rekening van de belastingbetaler komen.

…THE LIONFISH

The Indo Pacific Lionfish Pterois volitans/miles is a
predatory, venomous fish which has been introduced as an invasive
species in the Atlantic Basin. The exotic looking fish is known for its
reddish brown and white banding patters that run vertically along its
body and the 13 venomous spines that run along the length of the fish.
This invasive carnivore can significantly reduce biodiversity of a
local habitat and can drive important fish species to extinction,
negatively affecting coral reef ecosystems. The fish also poses a risk
to the health of the Bonaire National Marine Park users as the species
possesses venomous dorsal, anal, and pelvic spines that can inflict a
painful sting that may result in serious health complications.

HOW DID THEY GET INTO THE ATLANTIC BASIN

The first lionfish was recorded off of the coast of West Palm Beach in
1992 and was possibly released through the aquarium trade (USGS 2002).
Since then the species has continuously migrated north reaching as far
north as Long Island, New York and as far east as Bermuda (USGS 2002).
Lionfish have also been reported in the Bahamas and south along the
Caribbean coasts of Mexico, Costa Rica, Honduras, Venezuela, and

THE FIRST LIONFISH ON BONAIRE

The Bonaire National Marine Park received the first positive
report on October 26, 2009 and immediately activated a previously
prepared comunication and action plan to remove as many lionfish as
possible. The critical point of this removal action is the accurate
marking and reporting to the Park Management in order to activate the
“removal team”. Due to its territorial behavior, relocation of a
lionfish after a marker is placed is highly probable.

HOW CAN YOU HELP

A simple and effective marker is distributed to all divers. The marker
consists of a 4 to 5’ by 1 inch surveyor tape.
We need your help to control this invasion.

*Ask your dive operator for the marker or call us, our phone
number is on your tag. *Do not try to catch it if you don’t have the right training
and gear. Unsuccessful attempts to catch a lionfish only make further
attempts more difficult.
*If you see a lionfish, please gently tie the marker
immediately above of the lionfish in the same coral colony (sponge or
rock) as close as you can.
*It may help us if the surveyor tape can float straight up.
You can make it float by attaching a wine bottle cork (or similar
floatation device) to it. Be sure that the tape is deployed in a
visible way for the removal team to locate it.
*Report dive site, depth and distance from the entry or buoy
to the Bonaire National Marine Park or to your Dive Operator as soon
as possible.
*Replace your marking tape.

The collection of the lionfish and recovery of your mark might
take some hours.
Most important, be extremely careful. Most of
the spines are venomous and can cause extreme pain! If stung during
diving, abort the dive immediately. Immerse wound in hot water and seek
medical attention as soon as possible.
